HIGHER EDUCATION SUPPORT FOR THE POOR SUPPORT POOR STUDENTS TO PERSUE COLLEGIATE AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION
In India only 7% of the relevant age group enters higher education. And for the poor ithas become extremely unaffordable with huge donations and capitation fee. Radical policy level intervention by the State only can alter this scenario. But until then GiveLife joins many individual efforts to support poor students to pursue collegiate and technical education.
In partnership with the Loyola College Outreach program we currently support 700 youth, mostly from the slum dwellings of Chennai. The level of support ranges from Rs. 2000 to Rs. 15000 depending on the branch of study pursued by the student.
Most satisfying though is the fact that at present, among the 700 beneficiaries 5 of them pursue medical education and all of them passed out from Chennai Corporation run schools.
Vision:
* To support 5000 youth by 2010,
* To support the efforts of National knowledge society commission through advocacy to expand and reform our education system to ensure that every child has an equal opportunity to enter the world of higher education.

We successfully experimented the project at Alamathi a village in Thiruvallur district.
It is a small village in Thiruvallur district, Ponneri taluk, and Cholavaram blocks. The village has 336 families in which 263 belong to schedule caste and 63 families are from backward class. The total population is around 1474 in which 1200 belong to schedule cast and 274 are from backward class. The men population is around 731 and female population is 743. Children population from 0-5 year are 102 in number.
Reason for Working in the Village:
Malnutrition is prevalent in the village among women and children. The major factors contributing to it are their food patterns, lack of nutritional awareness, lack of awareness on the facilities available around them, and their accessibility towards them and occupational pattern. Anemia is also largely present among women.
